Requirements to Vote in Federal Elections

To vote in federal elections in the United States, you must be a U.S. citizen. Citizenship can be obtained in one of the following ways:

  • By birth in the United States
  • By birth abroad to a U.S. citizen parent
  • Through the naturalization process

In addition, you must:

  • Meet your state’s residency requirements.
  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day.
  • In some states, you may be allowed to register before turning 18 if you will reach voting age by Election Day. Check your state’s requirements here:

  • Register to vote before your state’s registration deadline.
